Apple and grape compote for winter - a simple recipe for any housewife!

This wonderful apple compote with grapes is my family's favorite. It is very delicious and fragrant and is prepared very simply and quickly. You can use only apples for the compote, but the grapes give it a special fragrance and flavor - suitable for sweet and sour (depending on the variety of apples).

Apple and grape compote is super tasty served in winter with pies. This delicious "combination" reminds me of my childhood… I sincerely hope you like it too! I highly recommend it!

Ingredients for a 3 l jar

-4-5 apples - any variety depending on preferences

-Isabella grapes (enough to fill 2/3 of the jar) - or any other variety depending on preferences

-2 glasses (200 ml) of sugar (one glass per 1 l of water)

Method of preparation

1. For this compote you can use any variety of grapes. We used Isabella.

2. Wash the jars (we used 2 l jars) and put them to drain on a kitchen towel.

3. Wash the apples (of any kind) and put 2-3 whole apples (medium size) in each jar. You don't have to cut them, just check if they fit easily into the jar (in a 3 l jar put 4-5 apples).

4. Wash the grapes well and add 2-3 bunches in each jar (2l) or fill 2/3 of the 3l jar. Carefully place the grapes over the apples.

5. Boil the lids for the jars for a few minutes, then dry them.

6. Prepare the compote syrup. For a 2-liter jar you will need about 1.5 liters of water (for a 3-liter jar - 2 liters of water). Calculate the amount of water and pour it into a saucepan. To each liter of water add 1 glass (200ml) of sugar. Stir the syrup and bring to the boil.

7. Pour the hot syrup into the jars and put the lids on immediately (without screwing).

8. If the prepared syrup is insufficient, you can add boiling water to the jars. If you have leftover syrup - you can prepare fresh compote from various fruits.

9. Place the jars in a large saucepan on a wooden grill (see picture) and pour hot water (70 degrees) until it reaches the mouth of the jar, bring the water to the boil, cover the pan with a lid and sterilize jars for 15 minutes.

10. Remove the sterilized jars from the pan and tighten the lids tightly.

11. Turn the jars upside down, cover them with a warm blanket and allow them to cool completely.

12. Apple and grape compote for winter is ready!

13. If you plan to make fewer jars of compote (or you don't have a large saucepan), you can prepare the compote in another way:

14. Sterilize empty jars beforehand (as usual).

15. Put the apples and grapes in jars. Pour boiling water into each jar. Put the lids on and let them soak for about 15-20 minutes.

16. Pour the water from the jars into a saucepan, add the sugar and bring the syrup to the boil, stirring constantly.

17. Pour the prepared syrup into jars and screw the lids tightly (fill the jars well with syrup, as the fruit absorbs a good part of it).

18. Turn the jars over on the lids, cover with a warm blanket and allow to cool.
The second method of preparing compote has only one disadvantage - while draining and pouring water back into jars, the grapes lose their shape, and the compote does not look as attractive as in the first case. The taste, however, is just as aromatic and appetizing. Choose the option that suits your preferences and enjoy this wonderful apple and grape compote with pleasure!

How to make an apple compote (basic recipe)

The choice of apple variety is very important, because the result will be a sweeter or more acidic compote or puree. In our case we will use reinetas apples, which will give a ration of 2 cups (or 2 people).

  • 4 reinetas mere
  • 5 tablespoons brown sugar (you can replace the panels)
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  1. Unwrap the apples, wash them well and remove the heart. Then cut them into small pieces.
  2. In a saucepan add chopped apple, cinnamon, sugar or brown sugar and water. Turn on the heat and let the apple boil until the water breaks to a boil, then turn down the heat and put it on medium heat.
  3. Now let the apples cook until soft.
  4. Remove the cinnamon and, if the texture is not desired, beat the compote or pass it through a mill.
  5. Ready! If you want, you can keep it in the refrigerator, stored in a boat.
